A carload of TJC supporters came from Chicago, including Rev. Jesse Jackson. The weather was spectacular and the community turnout was beautiful! TJC and Partners ran out of: the 200 TJC Tee shirts; the delicious food for 400 people; and, the book bags for children. Over 40 free hair cuts were provided for boys, and the event included a cook our, great music, face paintings for children, a bouncy house, and loads of Pure FUN!!! Lots of local politicians showed up to engage with the crowd. During the second segment of the show, Barbara and Daryl will preview TJC’s August. 6th #AndStillIVote National Broadcast, being held in honor of the 57th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.
The third and fourth segments of the show will feature an exclusive interview with Marc Elias, a nationally recognized authority and expert in campaign finance, voting rights, redistricting law, and litigation. He is the founder of Democracy Docket, the leading progressive media platform dedicated to voting rights and democracy, and Elias Law Group,a mission-driven firm committed to helping Democrats win, citizens vote, and progressives make change.
In 2020, Marc led the historic legal effort to protect voting rights, filing over 160 lawsuits in the face of the pandemic and a national effort by the GOP to make it harder to vote. When Trump contested the legitimacy of the 2020 election, Marc met every futile challenge at the courthouse, notching over 64 legal victories against the former president and his allies during the post-election period, alone. As Republicans continue to mount aggressive challenges to voting, Marc continues to fight back in court—and on Twitter— at breakneck speed.
Marc is an alumnus of Duke Law School and a proud owner of a Portuguese Water Dog named Bode.
“The voting rights world is not taking a vacation this August…Democracy Docket is currently tracking 156 lawsuits across 39 states, with some expected court activity this month in Montana, New York, Texas and more…Below [are some of the] cases with likely court action over the next month…Voter suppression laws are front and center in courtrooms in August. Along with the lawsuits mentioned below, [Democracy Docket is] monitoring a Republican lawsuit in Arizona focused on mail-in voting, multiple challenges against mail-in voting access in Pennsylvania and briefing about Florida’s voter suppression law that’s ongoing in a federal appeals court.”
